High Intensity Exercise DVDs - Not for everyone!
In recent years there has been a massive influx of DVDs which are action packed, high intensity, functional, have insane exercise combinations and all available to buy at the fraction of the cost of getting a Personal Trainer. Most of the DVDs come with incredible testimonials and people all over the world are achieving things they never thought they could have before... Great news!
If you are someone who has exercised for the majority of their lives, have had no injuries and no heath issues then you can pick up one of these DVDs and be on your way to achieving your goals. However, there is a downside to these DVDs. There is an increasing number of people who do make the investment and complete the workouts as best as they can, but are forced to suddenly STOP after picking up an injury or aggravating an old injury.
Whilst you are in the comfort of your living room and the TV is explaining to you how to do the exercises, there is no guarantee that you have the correct conditioning, flexibility, proprioception or coordination to complete the exercises correctly without any adaptation for you. As a Personal Trainer with over 10 years experience, it is extremely rare that I have planned an exercise and a client has been able to complete it perfectly, without any input or individual adaptation from me. This ranges from clients who have been exercising all their lives, to clients who are complete novices.
At Core Wellness Centres we often see clients who have come to us because they have developed injuries to their backs, necks, knees, hips and shoulders whilst doing home workouts. Therefore we structure our training sessions to make sure our clients can do functional movements and find out their limitations before increasing the intensity - Making it safe and beneficial alongside their goals. These are not always injury related adaptations either. We have many clients who want to train with us as they have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high BMI and many other health issues that directly affect what exercises and exercise intensity they can work at.
Remember that warning at the beginning of any exercise DVD that says "Please consult a Doctor before exercising" is extremely important. Whether you do it short-term or long-term, invest in correct training methods for you, as a quick-fix DVD is not worth the pain of a long-standing injury!
